ABOUT

The ScratchBook explores the possibilities of
turntablism. Turntablism involves one or more
phonographic turntables that are used in the
spirit of a musical instrument. In combination
with an audio mixer, the record is to be moved
back and forth to manipulate the sound it is
given. By doing so you create a technique
which is called scratching.

It was invented by DJ Grand Wizzard Theodore
in the 1970's. Through unique manipulation of
the record, the turntablist creates new sounds
by not only moving the record back and forth
but also by using the mixer precisly to create
an on/off effect of the music. Ultimately live or
spontaneously the turntablist produces a new
musical composition by reconstructing an existing
phonograph recording. Intensly trained and
precisly executed hand movements express
a new composition that is unrecognisable
from its original ingredients.
